A. O. Smith Announces Leadership Transition

A. O. Smith Corp. confirmed that Kevin Wheeler, its executive chairman, will step down from his role on July 1. Stephen Shafer, currently president and CEO, will take over as chairman while maintaining his leadership of daily operations. Wheeler will remain on the board, ensuring a smooth transition.

Three-Decade Tenure Concludes

Wheeler’s career with A. O. Smith spans 30 years, from his 1994 start as a regional sales manager to his roles as president, CEO, and chairman. His tenure saw the company grow through acquisitions, global expansion, and handling the pandemic. Chris Mapes, lead director, highlighted Wheeler’s contributions, noting the company’s strengthened portfolio and resilience during crises. Wheeler joined A. O. Smith in 1994 as a regional sales manager and held several leadership roles before becoming president and CEO in 2018 and chairman in 2020. His leadership during these years included overseeing the company’s strategic acquisitions, which expanded its product lines and market presence. Mapes emphasized that Wheeler’s tenure was marked by a commitment to long-term stability, particularly during the unprecedented challenges of the global health crisis, which required swift adaptation in supply chains and customer engagement.

Shafer’s Expanded Role

Shafer, who has led the company since July 2025, will now serve as the 11th CEO in company history to hold both chairman and CEO titles. Mapes praised Shafer’s strategic vision, stating the dual role will align operations and long-term goals as the water heating industry shifts toward electrification and efficiency standards. “Steve has demonstrated strong, strategic leadership and a deep understanding of our business and growth opportunities,” said Mapes. “His combined role as chairman and CEO will further strengthen alignment across our strategy, operations and long-term value creation.” This consolidation is intended to streamline decision-making processes, allowing the company to respond more dynamically to industry trends such as the increasing demand for smart, energy-efficient appliances and compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks.

Continuity for Contractors

The transition maintains stability for A. O. Smith, a major player in residential and commercial water technology. The company continues investing in innovation while leveraging Wheeler’s board expertise. Shafer emphasized his commitment to driving progress and thanked Wheeler for his support. As one of the industry’s largest manufacturers of water heaters and boilers, A. O. Smith’s leadership shift is designed to ensure uninterrupted service to contractors and customers. The company’s ongoing investment in research and development, particularly in areas such as thermal storage and renewable energy integration, shows its dedication to maintaining a competitive edge in a rapidly changing market.
