On July 15, 2019, the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) will host its 23rd annual Renewal & Remembrance ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, an event that is expected to draw roughly 400 environment and lawn-care professionals representing 28 different states across the country.

Volunteer Work Targets More Than 200 Acres

The day’s efforts will concentrate on the cemetery’s extensive grounds as well as the neighboring Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery, with volunteers addressing tasks that affect over 200 acres of historic terrain, from manicured lawns to shaded pathways.

One of the primary projects involves spreading more than 60 tons of limestone across the turf areas; this material supplies essential nutrients that promote healthy grass growth and helps maintain the visual uniformity of the fields.

In addition, teams will aerate more than 85 acres of turf, a process that loosens compacted soil, strengthens underground root systems, and improves water infiltration, thereby enhancing the long-term resilience of the environment.

Additional duties include inspecting and repairing irrigation networks to ensure efficient watering, installing native plants that curb erosion on sloped sections, and fitting lightning protection on selected trees to guard against storm damage.

Maintaining paved walkways and restoring flagstones are also on the agenda, work that helps preserve the cemetery’s visual integrity and provides a safe, attractive route for the many visitors who come to pay their respects.

Children’s Program Adds Educational Dimension

A parallel children’s program will welcome volunteers aged 3 to 13 and their families, offering them the chance to plant flowers and learn about the cemetery’s status as an accredited Level III arboretum, a designation that reflects its diverse collection of mature trees and shrubs.

Missy Henriksen, NALP’s vice president of public affairs, said the industry “thrives on giving back and creating green spaces for the betterment of our communities.” She added that participants view the work as “the ultimate sign of respect for veterans.”

The day will begin at 7:30 a.m. with an opening ceremony at the newly restored James Tanner Amphitheater, featuring keynote speeches and a dedication of the planned projects that will guide the volunteer crews through the morning.

The NALP represents nearly one million professionals across landscaping, irrigation, and tree-care sectors, advocating for industry standards and providing education, certification, and networking opportunities that support its members’ growth.
