Cassette tapes transformed into glowing table

Old cassette tapes, once common in 1990s entertainment centers, now gather dust in thrift stores instead of playing music. A TikTok creator discovered a way to turn them into a unique light-up table unavailable in stores.

Turning thrift store finds into decor

The project, created by TikTok user trashboy_nyc, transforms discarded cassette cases into a glowing, geometric table. Empty cases are glued onto plexiglass sheets, arranged into a cube-like shape, and fitted with a light source inside. The outcome is a retro-inspired piece that serves as both furniture and ambient lighting.

Without a working player, cassette tapes often end up stored away or thrown out. This approach gives the plastic cases a new purpose, making them useful and visually striking.

The design allows for flexibility. Builders can choose pre-cut plexiglass for a quicker build or cut their own for a custom size. Cutting requires safety gloves, goggles, a glass cutter or circular saw, and sandpaper to smooth edges.

How to build the table step by step

For those using pre-cut plexiglass, the first step involves removing tapes from their cases and arranging the empty shells in neat rows on the sheet. The aim is to cover most of the surface with minimal gaps. If the cases don’t fit perfectly, builders can fill empty spaces with washi tape, patterned wallpaper, or pages from old magazines.

After gluing the cases, five sheets—four for the sides and one for the top—are assembled into a cube. A ceramic lamp base is placed inside, with the bulb casting a warm glow through the translucent material. Some add pearls or other decorations to the top sheet for extra style.

Those cutting their own plexiglass start by measuring and marking the sheets before using a glass cutter or circular saw. Once the edges are sanded smooth, assembly follows the same steps. Corner protectors can be added if the edges remain sharp.

The process takes time. Even with pre-cut materials, it demands patience, especially for beginners. The final result—a custom table with a nostalgic glow—may justify the effort for DIY fans and upcycling enthusiasts.

Supplies like Voisen’s plexiglass sheets or Yxth’s ceramic lamp bases can simplify the project. Thrift stores remain the best source for materials.
