Old frying pans don’t belong in the trash. With a little effort, they can become useful or decorative items for nearly any room in the house.
Cleaning and prep come first
Most upcycling projects begin with the same step. Scrub off food residue using aluminum foil and baking soda. Handles are often removed, but only if they won’t be needed later. Acrylic paint, Mod Podge, and rustic materials like burlap or twine are typical supplies.
Cast iron and other heavy-duty metals, particularly from vintage pans, already have a look that suits farmhouse or old-fashioned decor.
From countertops to bathrooms
A knobbed frying pan can be turned into a pedestal dish for fruit or small items. Remove the handle, glue two round knobs on either side, and attach an upside-down cup or candle holder to the bottom. Decoupage floral napkins around the outside for a finished appearance.
Two matching pans, stripped of their handles and wrapped in braided twine, can be joined with a dowel to create a double-tiered bathroom storage tray. The twine softens the metal’s edges, adding texture to the space.

Plants and wall art
A frying pan works well as a hanging plant stand. Spray-paint it, place it in a macrame hanger, and set small pots on top. The pan serves as both a decorative base and a catch tray for excess water.
Rusted pans can be transformed into faux antique wall art. Print a vintage image, cut it into a circle, and decoupage it to the back of the pan. Distress the edges with ink, add wooden appliques, and hang it on a hook for a unique piece.
Small succulents thrive in deep skillets, though they may outgrow the space eventually. Paint the outside of the pan, but avoid coating the inside—paint can seep into the soil.
These projects help reduce waste while adding character to a home. The same pan that once cooked eggs could soon hold keys, a houseplant, or a piece of art.
